Neuro Linguistic Programming and Advanced Communication Skills for Sports Coaches
Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) represents a branch of modern psychology which describes a range of methodologies whereby the structure of behaviour can be modelled, learnt, taught, and changed. Many of these techniques and strategies involve the use of language and communication (linguistic) to cause changes (reprogramming) at neurological (Neuro-) levels, hence, neuro-linguistic programming. They work on the assumption that the meaning (and relevance) of any given communication is in the response you get to that communication – rather than what you think you are communicating. Naturally, this will be the case whether the communication is with others or with ourselves.
The techniques of NLP give coaches tools to gain control over two vital areas of their behaviour so as to directly enhance their effectiveness:
- Understanding the ways of communicating that consistently elicit the required responses from athletes.
- Tools that allow coaches to manage their own psycho-physiological states (and therefore their behaviour) in pressure situations.
The models, techniques and strategies employed by effective practitioners of NLP can be taught at a variety of levels from introductory workshops to full mastery.
